Green Bay Packers quick football preview
August 9, 2009
The Packers faithful got to see that Aaron Rodgers is the real deal and a fine heir to Brett Favre. Rodgers was impressive last season and any improvement will put him amongst the league's elite quarterbacks.
The Pack have an extremely deep receiver corps for Rodgers to throw to. Greg Jennings is the young ultra talented starter opposite savvy veteran Donald Driver. Jordy Nelson is a play maker with a knack for making a big catch. James Jones may be the most talented receiver here. Look for him to command more playing time with his outstanding play. Ruvell Martin is a tall receiever with great "ups" that honed his craft under James Lofton.
Ryan Grant has been fighting the injury bug soem and former second round pick Brandon Jackson has not proven to be the answer. Grant is a fine starter. Deshawn Wynn and Kregg Lumpkin provide terrific depth. As of this writing, Wynnw as having a fine training camp, but will be out four weeks with an injury. It's always a shame when a youngster's progress is stopped due to injury.
Tight End Jermichael Finley struggled when he was given significant minutes in 2008. He has been impressive this offseason and the Pack think he's ready to make a significant contribution in 2009. Remember though, the wide receivers are probably a better option in the passing game.
Chad Clifton begins his 10th year with the Pack. Daryn Colledge enters his fourth year and is equally solid on the offensive line. The other three starters leave some questions. 2008 draft picks Breno Giacomini and Josh Sitton should start. Jason Spitz should move further inside and start at center. This is a good line also with some decent depth, but they'll have to gel and produce. Any failure could steamroll this extremely potent offense's production.
The Packers are switching to a 3-4 defense and will be in flux all season. Fortunately they have some outstanding playmakers that should help them struggle through it. It will be a struggle, but the hope is that as the season wears on this can be a top unit. The Packers five rookies should bolster this unit and further display how they are ready to become a top defense.
Durant Brooks and Jeremy Kapinos are not very good punters. Special teams coach Shawn Slocum has his work cut out for him. Mason Crosby is a fine kicker.
The defense's switch to the 3-4 will be key. This team has the talent to win it all. It may take a year or two for things to gel though.
